One of Art Show Across Aotearoa’s top ten artists due to consistently high sales, Yana Meech strikes a chord with many who meet her. At the very first art show in Christchurch a decade ago, Yana’s popularity was evident, with her work selling out before the show ended! Yana is a regular contender in the Lawson’s Dry Hills PINK People’s Choice Award, securing her place as a top ten artist many times over the last ten years. Her bubbly personality and art style are a huge hit with art show customers who look out for her work at Art Shows Across Aotearoa events.
Yana lives on a hill in Katikati, overlooking the coastline of the Bay of Plenty, which spreads out below like a giant landscape canvas. She shares her home with her partner, a blended family of four teenagers, two faithful dogs and a menagerie grazing the hills. Once the kids are off to school, she feeds the animals and disappears into her studio, losing herself in her work (back in the days when her children relied on her for the school run, she confesses she would nearly forget to pick them up, sprinting out of the garage studio grabbing the car keys and being “slightly late’!).
Yana started painting full-time 18 years ago, merging acrylic with inks—an unusual style that she has evolved over time.
Her work ranges from contemporary landscapes to abstracts, experimenting with both old and new techniques. Her signature style can be described as atmospheric and moody, often inspired by the rural views from her home.
Yana always has a show coming up. In October, she’ll be exhibiting at the Queenstown Art Show Across Aotearoa.
“Queenstown is where I started painting when I lived there in my early 20s. It was such an inspirational location to create,” Yana says.
She enjoys the ‘extended family’ feeling of the Art Across Aotearoa Shows and has exhibited with organisers Kate and John Morrison since their very first show at Wigram Airbase in Christchurch many years ago.
Over a full four days during the Queenstown show on Labour Weekend, Yana is looking forward to meeting art enthusiasts from all walks of life. While painting is a solitary activity, Yana thrives on social interaction at the show and feels that her pieces have more meaning to people who have met her.
