The art shows all feature original artwork and are a chance to meet some of the artists in person. Introducing our artist of the month, Catherine Cattanach; who will be exhibiting her own unique style of botanical creative photography for us to all enjoy.
Catherine describes herself as a Wellington-based portrait and fine art photographer, wife, mother, and coffee aficionada. Always seeking ways to look at the world through a different lens, Catherine started experimenting with taking photos of flowers with water. This artistic and novel approach, challenges us to reimagine still life photography. There is no photoshop used here!
Her ‘Magnolia’ series breaks free from the traditional. “I am using nature to transform nature in a way, by using rippled water to transform the appearance of the flowers. I love the painterly, dream-like images that result. I want the botanical world to be felt as an experience that goes beyond the familiar observation. I hope the images allow space for the viewer to bring their own emotions and contemplations to the photographs,” says Catherine when asked about her creative photography.
She has long admired the work of American painter Georgia O’Keeffe, and cites a quote from her as particularly relevant to her own work:
When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, the have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not. – Georgia O’Keeffe
