The Wellington Art Show hits town from 28 February to 2 March, so it’s time to start thinking which of the top ten artists will get your vote. Meet our Artist of the Month, Jan Oram, a newcomer last year to Art Shows Across Aotearoa, and top ten contender for the PINK People’s Choice Award.

Jan shares with us a little about herself and why she has a passion for painting quirky animals dressed in vintage fashion and jewels.

We asked Jan what it meant to be chosen as a ‘top ten artist’ and invited to paint a PINK Pinot Rosé inspired entry, she said “Well, I’m a big rosé fan, so being picked for the Pink Award just seemed fitting to me!” replied Jan.

Hailing from Palmerston North, this self-taught artist works out of her studio (aka kitchen), with her dining table as her easel. Jan’s artistic pieces have gained great popularity with her whimsical personification of our favourite critters, posing in Victorian fashion glad rags.

Jan tells us her style is ever changing, but her specialty is adding glamour to detailed and realistic wildlife art, with the twist of dressing them in stylish ensembles. All her animals have a story to tell.

Sharing her life with a wonderfully supportive husband and two grown children, she says they always lend themselves to inspire and encourage her artistic journey. Jan also adds that her most helpful critic is her personal assistant, Maxine Bean, her wee furry hound!
