Angela Maritz’s bold work catches the eye. Her intention is to create strong, confident, joyful art that makes you feel alive.
Angela took art at school in South Africa where she grew up. She describes it as a country of vast contrasts in landscape, wildlife and culture. “The ever-present pendulums of peace versus conflict, justice versus corruption, harmony versus lawlessness and the massive divide between rich and poor – all of these, intermingled with my own family history and experiences, influence the artist I am today”, she says.
Angela got hooked when she discovered she could use art as a way of expressing herself. “I realised that if I could paint how I was feeling, as well as how I wanted to feel, I’d actually come away feeling like that.”
Lots of experimenting with different mediums over many years led her to a preference for acrylics.
“I love the speed at which it dries, enabling me to add layer upon layer with very little drying time required in between”, Angela says.
What inspires Angela?
“My inspiration always comes during the process of creating a painting. I love the challenge of creating something that hasn’t been created before and I love that I get to do something that makes this world a better place by giving the people that live with it on their walls the same feelings that I experience while painting”, she says
Angela is a regular at the Art for Aotearoa Show, having exhibited nine or ten times.
“I love the interaction with people. The people that stop to chat rather than simply walk past, are the ones that ‘get’ your work. You end up coming away with this huge feeling of gratitude. Plus, I’ve made special, lifelong friends with fellow artists. We understand each other, all working solo in our studios creating ‘stuff’ that hopefully says something to the world to make it a better place.”
